Top Boy Review - Grimier and Grittier than ever

topboynetlix0508e.jpg

Top Boy the exciting UK series that depicted struggles of urban life in poor communities became UK cult classic due to its realistic depiction, excellent camera work, sound & music, writing and raising awareness of the real issue of inner-city London communities. It enjoyed success for two series when it originally aired on Channel 4, however the show was brought abruptly to end and many believed it would never see the light of day again.

Drake a Toronto native and a world hip hop star, for a long time, has taken a liking to UK urban and black culture through grime and UK rap, while many such as Wiley perceived him to be a culture vulture he continued to show love to the UK. However it still came as surprise when he decided to bring back Top boy through partnering up with Netflix as well as bringing back the original cast 6 years since it had last aired. While many people got overhyped and some were sceptical, there was no denying there was the anticipation for the show would it surpass the original or would it be a misrepresentation of UK culture?

Especially with newcomers such as the renowned rapper Dave who has collaborated with Drake in the past, this was the first time he gets an opportunity to display his acting skills and if the show is successful it would be a big move for him.

I am glad to say the show surpasses expectations and is a satisfying watch. The level of quality in production is to an extremely high standard. When I first started watching it almost put me off due to the extreme cinematic advancement in comparison to the previous series, but once I adjusted there was no doubt that it was beautifully shot. The story itself is well laid out, complex but easy to a follow with high stakes and plenty of plot twist. Top Boy still retains the shock value, it feels bracingly different to almost every other TV drama around, and it continues to carve its path. As with its predecessors, the action is set in the heart of the drug-based gang wars of east London.

Without trying to spoil too much I will go over plot events and highlights of the show. It begins in Jamaica with Dushane far from the streets they used to run. He is lying low, struggling to live a civilian life while his ego keeps reminding him of the status he once commanded, faced with some extreme circumstances he is forced to go back to London. Sully, played with heartbreaking bluster and fragility by Kane “Kano” Robinson, is in prison, trying to keep his nose clean ahead of his imminent release.

However, a new generation of criminals is more than happy to step into the shoes that have been left vacant. Jamie (Michael Ward) is a sweet kid who takes care of his two younger brothers following the deaths of their parents. He is also a violent and ruthless gangster, this duality not only defines this character but also has huge subsequent impact on other characters and narrative arks. The other protagonist Modie played by Dave is in prison. These characters are all struggling for power and influence and there are many other characters narratives and plots from a love interest, family to betrayal that all play into the power dynamic. The characters are all rich well developed and are only an improvement on their character development from the previous show while new character such as dave is extremely unique, vibrant and bring allot show and are iconic

And the violence is gruesome. There are plenty of guns, knives and baseball bats. There are moments of excitement and confusion as disturbing ones too. The changes that are sometimes violent brought to top boy world symbolize the changing landscape of London. The Turks are the new Albanians, controlling the drugs supply until the younger, hungrier gangs grab at a brutal solution to a pricing problem. The fractious atmosphere of British society is always lurking in the background. County lines drug-dealing takes familiar characters to Ramsgate, against a backdrop of asylum seekers being abused and exploited on all sides. In London, immigration officials are cracking down using paperwork, fear-mongering and bureaucracy.

However while the show does give subtle references to previous story arks from its predecessor show, it fails to really continue to develop these in new series other than narratives of main characters such as the story of Michael, who’s only referenced in the new show is a brief flashback. It would have been a nice addition to hardcore returning fans of the show however ultimately I feel this is beneficial to the show it is not too reliant on the success and narratives of the previous show and instead comes up with unique narrative that are realistic scenarios and exciting to show but still relevant to overall series.

As result the series feels fresh new and rather than a bad continuation or remake of the original. The start at the beginning in Jamaica also could have been better executed the characters in jamaica were not as well executed or developed as London characters. For obvious reason the Jamaican accent/patois was watered down for television, however the real flaws lie in people such as Dushane’s cousin and Sugar. They are not as developed as other characters on the show due to their brief appearances however this is not to underestimate their overall importance to narrative ark as they still play significant role. Other characters such as crazy eye’d Jamaican (forgot the dons name) and Alessandro Babalola played by Haze do bring more to the role however it would have been nice to know more about the Jamaican characters motives and relationships rather than them just being a motive for the Dushane to go back to the UK.

Ultimately the show is an extremely good watch, I binged it and it surpassed my expectations that I had developed from watching the original. The characters are well developed the narratives are complex and interesting, It is extremely well shot, the show references real-life issues from gun and knife crime, county lines, acid attacks, deportation, drug addiction, single parents and more that occur in the UK today however it does this in an entertaining way not over the top and lot of these scenes hold serious weight. Overall I would give the show an 8.5 - 9 out of 10 or 4/5 stars

rollingloud-2017-sunday-32.jpg

The 30 year old Rakim Mayers, has been found guilty of assault during a Stockholm fight and given a two-year suspended sentence.

ASAP Rocky has been held in custody for a month, two other members of ASAP Rocky's entourage, Bladimir Corniel and David Rispers, were found guilty of the same charge.

However due to the circumstances not being serious in nature If ASAP and fellow convicted entourage commit no crimes on probation they will face no Jail time. The artist and co defendants claim they acted in self defence.

The Case Controversy

ASAP Rocky’s case raised multiple issues and subsequently gained international attention . Firstly this has raised the issue of the treatment of blacks in Europe often when thinking of racial injustice most point US and African American experience however there has been a recent trend in Europe of racial injustice due to the influx of migrants. Institutional racism towards those of African Decent has been a growing issue in countries such as the UK, Italy, France and more, furthermore this not the first time an African American has been wrongfully convicted overseas in Europe. If we point to the Freddie Gibbs case in Austria rape accusations were made against and subsequently he served Jail Despite being completely Innocent. Several Hip Hop Artist have decided to boycott sweden on future tours.

Perhaps one of the biggest controversy was Presidents Trumps response to the situations, After make comments deemed racist to immigrants and blacks such as Ilhan Omar trump attempted to gain support of African Americans through giving support to the ASAP ROCKY situation however this largely failed, Trump simply put did not understand how sweden Justice system work, offering to pay bail even though sweden does not have a bail system in fact most countries do not as it favour the wealthy and affluent, allows them to escape Justice.

However in sweden there is no Maximum amount of time someone can be held before their trial. The EU committee for prevention of torture has long critisced Sweden for its long pre trial detentions, and legal experts in Sweden have been trying to reform this for time. This case could be the catalyst prison reform in Sweden

However perhaps the biggest and most recent controversy is that the people ASAP Rocky supposedly fought were also not convicted despite in most of the released video they were being aggressor and violent, furthermore ASAP ROCKY must pay a fine which will go towards supposed victim of attack. The court said the victim of the assault, a 19-year-old refugee, was awarded damages for what the court described as the violation of his integrity and for pain and suffering.

Unknown T charged with Murder

1272110.jpg

Unknown one of the most promising upcoming talents in Drill and UK Rap scene has been charged with murder.

Daniel Lena ( 19years old) along with two other men Mohammed Musse and Raman Boreland, both 20 were charged with murder and violent disorder.

On New Years Day 2018 at a flat in Islington Steven Narvaez, 20, of Belvedere Kent was found stabbed to death along with another man whom was recovered.

Narvaez Narvaez-Jara was a physics and aerospace student at the University of Hertfordshire. He was one of four young men stabbed to death within 15 hours of each other over the new year period. The Killing is extremely unfortunate and hopefully justice is brought for this man.

As for what this means for Unknown T career could also be unfortunate as well, The Drill star recently had another hit song ‘Leave that Trap’ and was planning on releasing more music soon, however this could put his career on hold, especially if he is found guilty. As for what this means for the entire UK Drill genre could mean more controversy, despite this crime haven taken place before Unknown T’s rise in music scene it seems that police often continually use UK Drill as scapegoat for UK violence especially in situations like this. While platforms like youtube decided not to censor Drill in defence of freedom of speech this still could mean a further clamp down on UK artist in general from the Police.

Skepta Drops 'Love Me Not' Visuals

Skepta-love-me-not-video-02.jpg

Skepta recently dropped cold new visuals for track Love me not. The track is definitely one of the highlights on his latest album ‘Ignorance is Bliss’ , bringing a bubbly UK Garage vibe to the hard hitting album while still packing a powerful message about love and self reflections. This is beautifully executed on the hook by Cheb rabi, while B Live and Skepta go back to back giving a mc rave vibe to the track while staying on topic about women, love and betrayal.

This visuals perfectly capture the essence of the song. It opens with a scene about a girl calling her man frustrated then quickly breaks into UK Garage inspired house party . In typical Garage style most of the people on screen are dressed smart, however the overall vibe of the video is not retro like many Garage visuals that come out today. Instead it is set in current day and feels very modern. A few people make cameos in the music video including Slowthai and Chipmunk as skepta has collaborated with both these artist in the part. You can listen to ‘Love Me Not’ and his latest album release ‘Ignorance is Bliss’ on all streaming services including Apple Music and Spotify,.

Could Freddie Gibbs and Madlib's Bandanna get Album of the Year?

1270733.jpg

The duo are back again with another groundbreaking project. Bandanna marks the second full length collaboration between Freddie Gibbs and Madlib whom both over time have acquired a cult fanbase. Their last project, 2014’s Piñata, was praised for its mix of Madlib’s ominous and sample heavy soulful beats with Gibbs’ skillfully delivered stories of street life.

The follow up Bandanna only strengthens the duo’s performance as they are more cohesive on this project but still are able execute what they do best. Madlibs delivers smooth soulful beats with unique smoky samples and edgy but artfully executed mixes. While Freddie Gibbs talks about everything from crime, the streets, the drug game, black activism and freedom, transatlantic slave trade and even cheating. This album is especially emotional for Gibbs as many of the raps on the album, were written when he was wrongfully in imprisoned in Austria for a crime he did not commit. He claims this is the best project he has put out so far, this is definitely reflected in the music.

So far the album has received largely positive feedback from reviewers, blogs and radio stations, praised for its complete deviation from current trap heavy sound, making it definitely stand out. Despite its root in more orthodox hip hop sound it is still skillfully executed and feels current and refreshing to listen to. Many have even suggested that it could end up getting album of the year.

Recently Skepta released visuals for “Bullet from a Gun”. This perfectly captures the message of the song. The video starts of with Skepta sitting at camden town underground train station with a baby stroller likely in reference to his child. The video shows him stuck in him time watching others make mistakes around him, and suffer the consequences in timelapse while he waits for the train.
